 Student’s Guide to Using AI Smarter.

Last week, we explored how Generative AI models work, how they're trained, and what the human-in-the-loop approach means. This week, let's dive into something super practical, how to get the best out of AI by asking the right questions also known as Prompt Engineering.

🧠 What is Prompt Engineering ?

In simple words, prompt engineering is the skill of asking AI the right way. A prompt is the message or instruction you type or give to the AI tool. The better your prompt, the better you get the response from the AI.

💡For example:

“Help me market clothes.” is a wrong prompt instead you can ask..
“Give me 5 creative Instagram marketing ideas for a women’s summer clothing brand.”

🔁 Prompting is an Iterative(Repeated) Process, let's see how :

You won’t always get the perfect answer on the first try. That’s okay. 
Prompt engineering is all about:
  • Try typing a version of your prompt that you want 
  • Check the response and 
  • Tweaking the prompt if there is a need 
  • Trying again until you get the desired response or output 
It’s like editing your assignments like draft, refine, repeat.

📌 Different Prompting Techniques :

In prompt engineering, you’ll hear terms like “shots”, which just means examples.

Zero-shot prompting: In this kind of prompting you'll need no examples, just instructions. And it is best suited for simple tasks.

One-shot prompting: This prompting requires one example. One-shot prompting is useful for slightly complex tasks.

Few-shot prompting: Few-shot prompting need two or more examples to give the output. This is ideal for tricky or specific tasks.




With good prompting, you can use AI to:

  • For Content Creation (Write content like emails, captions, essays)
  • Summarize long texts into shorter ones
  • Classify reviews as positive, negative, and neutral
  • Extract useful information from reports
  • Solve problems and brainstorm ideas easily and quickly 

Basically, AI becomes your creative, analytical, and writing assistant all in one.

What is LLM and how do they work ?

To write effective prompts, it's helpful to understand how LLMs actually function. A Large Language Model (LLM) is a type of AI that’s trained on a massive amount of text like books, websites, and articles. It learns the patterns between words and how language is typically structured.

Consider you've asked,  “After it rained, the street was…
Then the LLM thinks: “What word usually comes next in this kind of sentence?” Next it calculates related probabilities and might pick “wet” or “damp”, since they’re the most suitable to fit in the sentence. It probably won’t say “dry” because that doesn’t match the pattern it learned.
This is how it builds responses by predicting the next most likely word, one step at a time. But sometimes AI might give different answers each time you ask the same question. It can sometimes be biased, because the text it learned from (like internet articles) may have built-in societal biases.

But AI Isn’t Perfect, because of below reasons :

  1. Even if you write a good prompt, you might face consequences like :
  2. Might hallucinate hallucinations are ai outputs that are not true)
  3. It could show bias (because it learned from biased data)
  4. AI doesn’t know real-time info (unless it’s connected to the web)

That’s why you need to think critically about the answers that AI gives. So, do not blindly trust it double-check the outputs or responses that you get.

Finally I would conclude by saying, Prompt engineering is like learning how to talk to an AI in its language. This process needs a bit of creativity, clear thinking, and patience. But once you get used to it, you’ll unlock the full potential of tools like ChatGPT and Gemini.
